Grades don’t equal ability.

Tape measures and rulers are both tools for determining the length of something. However, a tailor wouldn’t use a ruler to figure out someone’s dimensions. That’s because rulers aren’t flexible enough. Similarly, an architect wouldn't use something as flimsy as a tape measure to draft up plans.

We’re almost assuredly doing our students and selves a disservice if we’re only using traditional assessment tools to measure them.

Portfolio Assessment: Students compile a collection of their work over time, showcasing their learning progress, skills, and achievements. It emphasizes reflection and self-assessment.

Performance-Based Assessment: Students demonstrate their knowledge and skills through real-life tasks or projects. This can include presentations, experiments or performances.

Peer Assessment: Students evaluate each other's work, which promotes engagement and provides diverse feedback. It encourages critical thinking and collaborative learning.

Self-Assessment: Students assess their own learning and progress, encouraging self-reflection and independence.

Competency-Based Assessment: Students advance upon mastering specific skills or competencies, rather than moving based on age or grade level.

Formative Assessment: Ongoing assessments during the learning process provide feedback and guide instruction, rather than culminating in a final grade.

8. **Project-Based Learning**: Students work on long-term projects that require them to apply knowledge and skills in practical and creative ways.

9. **Open Book/Take Home Tests**: These assessments are aimed at understanding application rather than memory, allowing students to use resources to solve problems.

10. **Adaptive Assessments**: Technology-driven assessments that adapt to a student's level, providing questions that match their ability and adjusting based on their responses.

Gamified Assessment: Using game elements like scoring and competition to make assessments more engaging and challenging.

12. **Oral Assessment**: Students verbalize their understanding and answer questions orally, allowing for immediate feedback and interaction.

These models shift the focus from traditional testing to a more nuanced understanding of student learning, aiming to enhance motivation, engagement, and the development of a broader range of skills.
